We've started checking out books again at MJHS. Along with this, we're reviewing the "Parts of a Book" and the "Kinds of Books" found in a library. It's exciting to me to see new students coming into the library for the first time!

For the next couple of weeks, review of the index, bibliography, preface, and dedication of a book will be reviewed. Reference books, such as geographical and biographical dictionaries, almanacs and encyclopedias will be used in a scavenger hunt before very long to ensure that students know how to use them.

I've given out 3" x 5" index cards with names of different books on them for students to search for the books so they can become familiar with the library. We've spent time discussing how all libraries are different in some ways. The MJHS library works hard at providing books of interest to students to get them to love reading! This is really the last years to give them this desire to read before the high school years delve into the research arena of the library. Accelerated Reader is still used at the junior high level here, but it is primarily an attempt to make sure students understand the material they are reading.

Join the faculty here at MJHS in helping give your sons and daughters a love of reading that will last them a lifetime!

We've just finished with almost all students an in-depth look at "Safety on the Internet". Students were reminded not to give out personal information about themselves, not to chat about anything that could lead predators to them, and just generally have good behavior while on the Internet. We discussed who they should tell is someone is bullying them on the Internet and who should be called if there is more serious trouble - in our case here in Moody it is Officer Higgins.

During these days, we discussed computer viruses, Trojan Horses and what to do if you get a Trojan Horse on your computer, how to make good passwords and login names, and how to protect your computers with antivirus software, spyware software, etc.

We also discussed copyrighted materials, plagiarism and the differences between the two. We've had very active discussions on copying music between friends.
